There’s only one place where Google Maps doesn’t work: Venice.
So, how can you reach Venice by car?
If you’re a techno-enthusiast with little sense of direction like me, you know the confidence coming from having Google Maps in your pocket.
An active data connection or the maps saved on your phone can drive you to any destination, whether it is a small town in Croatia, or the Trump Palace in Las Vegas.
There’s only one place where Google Maps doesn’t work: Venice.
Although Google Street View men have mapped Venice in 2013, Google Maps direction are actually misleading.
In fact, according to Google Maps, it seems you can get to Venice downtown by car.
Below is the directions suggested to reach St Mark’s Square from Padua
- solid line (with delays) to Piazzale Roma
- dotted line from Santa Croce to St Mark’s Square: it means that you CAN’T GO BY CAR on the “fondamenta”, the canal walkways
Yes, because Venice is still on the water, and no, it is not accessible to cars beyond Piazzale Roma!
Evidently, these British tourists were instead convinced they could reach their hotel, Gritti Palace, by car.

So, can you drive in Venice? No!
Then, how can you reach Venice by car?
Leave your car in Mestre or in Piazzale Roma, there’s plenty of parking lots.
And leave your GPS off, both for the maps and for Pokémon Go, although they are not yet landed in Venice (LOL)
